Visor Anti-Fog Treatment Made Clear
Motorcycle helmet visors have usually already had anti-fog treatment when you buy them, but is that really all you need?
Fogging is a major issue with motorbike helmets. The visor shuts over an enclosed space and your breath can cause huge visibility problems on an ordinary day, not just an especially cold one. If your helmet has been kept somewhere cold then you might even end up with misting and condensation on both sides of your visor.
It goes without saying that, just like with a window or car windscreen, fogging can cause major problems when riding a motorbike and it is important that your visor is treated to prevent this from becoming a problem when it’s too late to do anything about it.
The anti-fog treatment that comes as standard on most visors is a lot better than no treatment at all, but it is still be no means a perfect solution to the problem. Some people claim that washing up liquid, spread thinly over the surface of a helmet visor on both sides, can help, but it can also create smears and blur vision. Other people prefer to use the official products.
Anti-fog treatment comes in three main types: liquid based, wax based or the third option of an anti-fog insert such as the Pinlock system.
Liquid and wax treatments both involve applying a thin layer of the product to the visor and, with a soft cloth, rubbing it in until the visor is once again clear and you can see through it easily without smears or lines. Some people think that these treatments work well, while others find that the products can cause ghosting of lights at night.
On the other hand, the Pinlock system involves an insert being attached to the visor by two pins, through two small, drilled holes in the visor. Visors can be bought with this already inserted though, if you would prefer not to drill holes into any visors you might wish to apply the treatment to, which many people might be uncomfortable with.
