fiberglass over a poly kayak?

Just bought a polyethylene Sea Kayak, and I'm wondering if I can apply a gelcoat over top of the plastic, or just place a complete layer of fiberglass over the hull? Or would it not adhere to the poly?

I have never heard of anyone doing that, and it doesn't sound like a good idea. For one, it's going to add a lot of weight to your kayak, and plastic boats are relatively heavy to begin with. I also think if you added gelcoat-- assuming it even adheres-- that it would crack very easily because of the flexibility of the poly underneath. Polyethylene already has great impact resistance and pretty decent abrasion resistance. Just store it away from UV, excessive heat, and don't let it fill up with rainwater, and it'll hold up pretty well.
