Is it ok for 12 year old to watch Full Metal Jacket (with an adult)?
My husband wants to watch Full Metal Jacket with my son who is almost 12 (1 week). What's the general consensus on allowing a 12 y/o to watch this movie?
Having an adult present does NOT make the viewing experience or psychological response any different for a kid. While watching it they may understand that it's a movie, but if you get them in their room alone they're going to have their mind racing at a mile a minute. This movie is NOT appropriate for a 12 year old, it's too realistic. Kids at this age have a hard time differentiating between real and film-depicted-real. It's rated R (restricted) for a Very Good reason! Kids may THINK they're mature enough to understand it, but they're really not. My little sister recently told me she wanted to dress up as the Drugies from A Clockwork Orange for Halloween. She's watched the movie a few times and thinks it's "cool" because it's controversial. When I asked her what it was about she had no idea. She became very defensive and argumentative and started yelling at me when I tried to explain just HOW awful the characters really were at a psychological level. There is nothing "cool" about them! The point here is that you can see something, you can think you've registered it, but in reality your mind just can't process it. For the record, she's 16 going on 17, and the rating of these films is the same.
I'm not the parent here, but I do strongly believe that exposing kids to violence at such a young age (and justifying it) is not wise. Plenty of research supports this.
So, I vote No.
