Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Reverse De La Riva / Reverse X-Guard Sweep #2
In this next video, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Professor, Stephen "The MMA Performance Professor" Whittier, shows another sweep from the "reverse De La Riva," or "reverse x-guard" position, a position which serves as an effective follow-up if your opponent continues to move away from his trapped leg and toward your back from the guard position discussed in the previous instructional videos on the collar and sleeve grip sweep to pass and gi chokes.
In the last lesson, Coach Whittier shows the first in the sweep series, best when your opponent's weight is pitched slightly forward.
With this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sweep, your opponent will either be basing his weight slightly back, or his weight will shift back as you start to unbalance him.
From here you will sweep your opponent backward. You can use your hand of your top arm and trap the opponent's nearest arm at the sleeve. The main part of the motion, however, is to release your grip on his ankle and place your bottom foot on the floor so that you can shift your hips away from your opponent slightly and extend your top leg to trip him backward.
As your opponent rolls onto his back, you will keep your sweeping leg extended and use it to "feed" your free arm under his leg during the transition for a tight under the legs guard pass (or steering wheel pass). It is important not to keep your legs locked in the reverse de la Riva lock on his leg during the sweep, as this will result in an unnecessary scramble for position.
Although Coach Whittier breaks the movement down into discrete parts, he points out the importance of using your opponent's momentum during his fall as your opportunity to transition fluidly into the pass.
