sewing machine for beginners?

hello, i am looking for a sewing machine...
i am a beginner and what i am going to use it for is: dance costumes (a lot of spandex and lycra), hems and curtains.....so, nothing major! I am not interested in one-step button holes, because i don't think i'll ever make one
do you have any suggestion of a model? i would like to spend less than $200, actually more around $100
i was thinking about buying this one: Singer Esteem II Sewing Machine - 2273

Your needs are simple. However, lycra spandex is MAJOR. It is more important that you use proper needles for the fabric. As long as the machine you choose does a quality zigzag...for dance costumes you don't need to worry too much about appearance. For appearance I would prefer a sort of feather stitch that can be adjusted by width (to give you a straight forward, forward & backward stitch - triple stitch forward & backward if that makes any sense). The advantage of adjusting your feather sort of stitch to zero width is that you can use a straight stitch plate and straight stitch foot (it helps to keep your fabrics from stretching through the plate as you stitch). Whatever you choose, take a FRESH BALLPOINT NEEDLE of appropriate size for the fabric & a good 12 to 14 inches of 4 way stretch lycra spandex with you to test on the machine. Better yet, also take a good 36 inches of the elastic you intend to use. This will give you a very clear test of how the machine will handle your chosen application. Stand your ground & try the machine for at least 15 minutes. Once you choose a machine, be prepared to change your needle frequently.

You can pick up great machines for very little ($20.00 or less) through classifieds; thrift stores; craigslist; etc. If they do not come with a manual, you can often find a copy of it online or (regardless of brand name) through your local Authorized Singer Repair Shop.

Sewing with lycra spandex is not easily done...there will be slippage and frustration..pin frequently with Good Quality BALL POINT PINS. You may find that it helps to use tissue paper under the seam line. Be prepared to practice, practice, practice.

I would strongly suggest a machine that has a manual presser foot adjustment...as you sew, the top layer does stretch a bit, and with a manual presser foot adjustment you can "sweet-talk" your fabric into coming out even. The manual pressure foot tension is generally found at the top of the machine on older models. I've had questionable results with "computerized, automatic adjustment machines".

Curtains & basic cotton or cotton blend hems are very basic and will be accomplished with any machine you choose...just be sure to change your needle!
