Bought a phone on ebay listed as mint condition but it was scratched?
I bought a phone on ebay that was listed in "mint condition". There were several very noticeable scratches on the back. I got it for a good price but it definitely wasn't as described. Can I get a partial refund?
eBay has rules for buyers and sellers to follow for *full* refunds, but not partial ones. That's because there is no objective way to determine the amount for a partial refund; for example you may think that the scratches entitle you to a partial refund of 20% of the original price, but the seller may think it should only be 10%. The only amount that anyone *can* agree on is what you actually paid, so that's the only amount that eBay has rules about refunding.
Therefore partial refunds are not 'official' and are up to the seller. So if I were you, I would send a polite but to-the-point email to the seller that says the phone was not as advertised, but that you want to keep it, and that you want them to paypal you the amount of $xx to compensate for the scratches, otherwise you will be returning the phone for a full refund instead.
