what is the difference between a neck tie and a bow tie?

I notice some events people will only wear neck tie, but then again there are other events people wear bow tie only. So I was curious, is there a difference between the two, and why some event wore neck tie/bow tie only. Is there an unwritten rule for this or it's because of personal preference.
