How does the destruction of the coral reefs affect the entire ocean ecosystem?

Coral reefs provide habitats for many marine organisms. Without the coral reefs these organisms are left without food and protection from predators and the harsh open ocean. Thus increasing the rate of mortality of in species that live there. Coral reefs are also used as spawning grounds and nurseries for species of fish. Without the reefs the spawning will be less effective decreasing the population more rapidly over time.
The destruction of the reef will initially increase the number of large predators due to a larger available food source, due to the lack of protection provided by the reef. This is due to more food being available to feed them. However this food source will run out causing high mortality in large predators and a flux in smaller predators that feed on molluscs. Molluscs numbers then decrease, which increases the bacteria in the water which eats away sea grasses and other organic matter, decreases oxygen in the water, decreases light penetration etc.
Simply it causes a chain reaction that effects both the breeding, behaviour and the conditions in which the fish species live in.
