what would a 6 carat pear shaped red diamond cost in mid 1950s?
Looking for detail in piece of fiction. The character has a pear shaped six carat red diamond. Or could be a white diamond with red 'veins' in it. The time period is 1953. How much would a jeweler pay for it wholesale and then what would it be worth retail. I know that red diamonds are the rarest of the so-called fancy diamonds. Beyond that I can't find much. Thanks a lot.
Most people are not familiar with diamonds that are not white.
There are two types of Colour Diamonds, enhanced and natural.
Enhanced (politely put) are diamonds that were pulled out too early and heated to get the colour- they are substantially less valuable.
Natural diamonds are of course ones that came out exactly as you receive them.
If you are going to buy an enhanced diamond, clarity is important. Since the diamond is NOT natural, it has no investment value and should have a clarity grade is SI2-3 or higher (occasionally a lower quality could be okay, if the diamond can still hold its ground- like in the case of Blue Diamonds).
A natural pink diamond is an investment stone in Any Size. In natural colour stones the clarity is the LAST thing you think about. First is COLOUR!
The highest price ever paid per carat for a colored diamond was in 1987 at Christies Auction House and was a 0.95ct Fancy Red Diamond that sold for over $927,000.00. It is hard to believe, however true, that a red diamond the size of your baby fingernail, is worth millions of dollars.
A Six Carat NATURAL Red Diamond would have its sale price on record, as it would be a significant sale and it would be worth multiple millions of dollars.
The misconception is that coloured diamonds are simply unattainable to most consumers is bogus. A smaller intense colour is a smart alternative to a larger light colour for the same price. Not only are these diamonds worth more per carat than a larger colour of weaker saturation, but their more vibrant color more than makes up for the loss of carat size.
