Baseball Hitting drills: how to get a short, compact stroke

The Problem: Getting short to the ball
Many hitters initially drive the knob of the bat towards the ground as they begin their stroke, causing the bat to flip behind them. The result? A long stroke and hands out of proper position.
The Super 8 Hitting Solution: "Shine the Light"
Encourage hitters to visualize the knob of the bat as a flashlight. Imagine a laser beam coming from the flashlight directly to the ball, and then "shine the light" on the ball, driving the knob in the direction of the pitch. This will help achieve the short, compact stroke by getting inside the pitch, in addition to getting the bat head into the proper contact position. From that point, the short stroke and proper contact will follow.

The Tiebreaker: Shoulder Position
Lifting the front shoulder just one inch invites the bat knob to drop down as well. Give an inch and take a mile!
