Rubber Band Racer
Rubber Band Racers are great fun as well as educational. There are kits for building these ingenious contraptions available online. They are useful in teaching valuable lessons in physics and engineering, as well. Lesson plans allow students to observe these racers in action while hypothesizing about their performance.
What makes them work? What types of energy are being utilized? How does their engineering affect their performance? There are a few models of rubber band racers that kids can really get a kick out of. Since these designs are available in the form of kits, they are also great fun to put together, as well.
The aero-style rubber band racers use wind power by way of propeller in order to move. Lightweight balsa wood is typically the preferred material in the design of one of these amazing little vehicles. The design of the frame is important to the speeds achieved and the stability of the creation.
The Sling Shot is another style of rubber band racer available. Able to travel 5 meters in just under a second, it has the unique distinction of being the fastest design type. The power for the long distance and impressive speed comes from the build-up of torque. The secret to this particular design is the pulley system which allows the rubber band to be stretched rather than wound, building up loads of energy just waiting to be released. In this design, the potential energy transferred to kinetic is maximized.
A simply awe-inspiring version of the rubber band racer is the hover craft. By using the laws of physics through the energy in a rubber band, this vehicle actually floats on a cushion of air. While it will not get to the end of the track as fast as a sling shot or aero-racer, it will dazzle onlookers nonetheless. The hover craft rubber band racer uses two rubber band-powered propellers; one for thrust and one for lift. A great feature of this type is that it can perform just as well on carpeted surfaces as it can on smooth surfaces.
There are a number of types of rubber band racers and kits are available for purchase online. Kids will have so much fun they will forget that they are learning something!
