Primary Clutch

95 flhr, starter runs but doesnt crank, took off primary, teeth good on both primary gear and jackshaft gear?

hit starter again, comes out but dont spin, release button goes back in, maybe the the starter clutch??? anyone know?

Not certain, but I believe Harleys use an automotive type starter clutch. What you describe sounds more like a typical electro-mechanical type clutch as opposed to the weighted, Bendix style.

On the electromechanical type, there's a electromagnet (soleniod) connected to the starter clutch. When you hit the button, the solenoid activates, slides horizontally and through a lever, pushes the toothed starter clutch toward and into the ring gear. As the solenoid reaches the end of its travel, it contacts to electrical contacts, which then send juice to the starter motor, turning it. Let up on the button, a spring shoves the soleniod back breaking the electrical connection and retracting the starter clutch.

All that said, it sounds as though the electrical contacts are eroded and failing to complete the circuit. Since the starter gear extends, the soleniod is working but no juice is being sent to the starter motor. The Jap made starters Chrysler uses operate on that principle and I've had to make new contacts.

To make sure the motor itself is ok and not burned out, you should be able to use jumper cables to connect the positive to the threaded lug on the starter and then ground the negative to the starter frame. The motor should spin.

Burned contacts normally don't cause sudden and immediate failure, but a sometimes, sometimes not behavior beforehand. If your's died an immediate death, it could be the starter motor itself, let's hope not. Good luck.
